Cookie policy

The technical and analytics cookies we use, what they're for and how to configure them.

Last updated: 22 September 2026

The short version

We don't use advertising or third-party tracking cookies. No Google Analytics, no social pixels, nothing that follows you around other websites.

Some of our own cookies are essential: they keep you signed in and remember your language. The rest are only for measuring visits on our own servers: which pages get read and which ads bring people who end up subscribing.

Whether we ask first depends on where you are:

  • In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a banner asks you before anything non-essential is set. Until you answer, we count your visit without storing anything on your device (see Counting visits without a cookie below).
  • Everywhere else, the law doesn't require consent in advance, so the banner doesn't appear and the measurement cookie is set from the first page. You can say no whenever you like with the button at the end of this page.

We work out where you are from your IP address, on our own server, without asking any outside service.

Which ones

CookieWhat forHow long
transcriptly_sessionKeeps you signed in. It's httpOnly: the page's JavaScript can't read it.30 days
transcriptly_authOnly says "there's a session", so the header can show the right button without waiting on a request. It can't identify you.30 days
transcriptly_guestLets you get back what you transcribed without an account. Without it, a page reload would lose your own transcript.7 days
transcriptly_visitorMeasurement. Tells one visit from another in our analytics, and remembers which ad brought you if you later subscribe. In Europe, only with your permission; elsewhere, until you say no.12 months
transcriptly_consentRemembers your answer to the cookie banner, so we don't ask again.12 months
transcriptly_localeRemembers the language you picked.12 months
transcriptly_currencyRemembers the currency you see prices in.12 months

In the database we don't store the value of the session, guest or visitor cookies: we store their fingerprint. Even if someone read our database, they couldn't rebuild the cookie.

Counting visits without a cookie

If you haven't accepted measurement cookies, your visit is still counted, but nothing is stored on your device. Our server groups the pages of one visit using a one-way hash of your IP address, your browser and a secret that changes every day. The IP isn't stored, and because the secret rotates daily, the hash can't be used to recognise you on another day.

What others set

Two services may set something of their own, and only where they're needed:

  • Cloudflare Turnstile, the check that you're not a robot, on the transcribe and sign-up screens. It's a captcha replacement built not to track.
  • Stripe, at the moment of payment, for fraud prevention.

Neither appears unless you reach those screens.

Changing your mind

The button at the end of this page opens the cookie choice again, wherever you are. Choosing Essential only removes the measurement cookie and we go back to counting your visits without storing anything on your device.

How to remove them

Your browser can delete or block them. Bear in mind that if you block the session cookie you won't be able to sign in: that's not a restriction of ours, it's that the session is that cookie.
